Brizzi Says No; Campo Eyed

Republicans aren't sure who they might tap to battle Democratic incumbent Andre Carson for the 7th District congressional seat the day after their nominee, Jon Elrod, dropped out of the race.

Elrod said Wednesday that defeating Carson, who had already beaten him in a special election in March, was a long shot, and Democratic officials said Thursday that they agree.

"There's no doubt about it. Andre isn't a hoss. Andre is the hoss in this race," said Marion County Democratic Chairman Michael O'Connor. "He's going to be very hard to beat."

Republican leaders insist they can still pull out a win, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

The first name on the lips of many top party leaders as the candidate they'd like to see in the 7th District is Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, who has plenty of name recognition and could raise the money needed for a fast campaign.

"Carl would be an extraordinary candidate, of course," said Indiana Republican Chairman Murray Clark. "I have not talked to Carl -- don't know if he's interested, but that'd be a huge plus for us."

But Brizzi told 6News Thursday that he isn't interested. He issued a statement through an aide that said he's flattered but committed to serving the citizens of Marion County as prosecutor.

"We have looked at a number of folks over the last 24 hours and will continue to be open to others," said John Hammond, 7th District Republican chairman.

Hammond, who will oversee a meeting of precinct leaders who will choose a replacement for Elrod, said he already has someone in mind.

"There is a woman by the name of Gabrielle Campo who we think really has the kind of vigor, youth and enthusiasm and matches up well, I think, with what this district may be looking for," Hammond said.

Campo, a social worker, ran against Elrod at January's Republican slating convention and lost. Hammond said she's a fresh face on the political scene who has impressed many people in the party.
