Indiana Marine Killed In Afghanistan

POSTED: 5:33 am EDT June 21, 2008

A Marine from Indiana was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Lance Cpl. Andrew Francis Whitacre, 21, of Bryant, died during combat operations in Farah Province, officials said.

Bryant is in Jay County, near the Ohio border.

Additional information about what caused Whitacre's death wasn't immediately released.

Late last week, another Marine from Indiana, Lance Cpl. Layton Bradly Crass, 22, was killed in a roadside bomb attack in the same province. Crass was in the same unit as Whitacre.

The Marines are in southwestern Afghanistan to help train the country's fledgling police.

Whitacre is the 19th member of the armed services from Indiana to die in Afghanistan or Pakistan since U.S. anti-terrorism operations began there in late 2001.
