Health Officials May Shut Down Troubled Apartment Complex

Officials Cite Continued Violations For Potential Shutdown; Company Defends Improvements

Health officials are pushing to shut down a troubled apartment complex on the city's northeast side, but told Call 6's Rafael Sanchez they can't move forward until they've found housing for all of the tenants.

The Timber Ridge apartment complex near 38th Street and Keystone Avenue has a well-documented history of violations, from roach infestations to leaking ceilings, according to the Marion County Health Department. There have been 73 violations already filed in environmental court, and a new round of inspections Thursday found several more, Sanchez reported.

Due to ongoing problems, the health department is looking at boarding up the buildings at Timber Ridge, Sanchez reported, but said it would not shut down the complex until the health department can guarantee replacement housing for current tenants.

"We are not seeing the kind of progress we'd hoped to see," John Althardt of the Marion County Health Department said. "That's why we're continuing to use all of our resources, including due process and legal system, to make improvements out there."

The company that owns Timber Ridge, New Jersey-based WK Timber Ridge, LLC, bought the property less than two years ago, and said they have made significant improvements.

“Timber Ridge management continues to work closely with the Health and Hospital Corporation and other city officials to resolve tenant concerns with the facility," the company said in a statement released Friday afternoon. "We have invested more than $1 million to make capital improvements, and we are continuing to move forward to remedy outstanding concerns, focusing especially on occupied units.

“We have not received any communication from the health department regarding a recent inspection, and are thus unable to answer specific questions on this topic.”

The company and the health department return to court next month.
