Man Shot, Killed In Home Invasion

Police Find Home Ransacked

UPDATED: 7:34 pm EDT July 7, 2008

A man shot and killed in an apparent home-invasion robbery at his home on the city's southeast side, police said.

The body of Clifford Haddix, 69, was found at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the hallway of his home in the 3000 block of Newton Avenue.

Neighbors called police after they noticed lights on in the home and went to check on him.

"He usually goes to bed around 9 or 9:30," said Margie Rinehart, Haddix's neighbor. "When he's in bed, there's no lights on. So, I called over there to see if he's OK."

Police said they think Haddix was killed after 10 p.m.

Investigators said the front door was kicked in and that the home had been ransacked. Investigators said they think robbery was the likely motive.

"It was a violent manner of death. It's our hope that somebody saw something or heard something and can help us find the individual responsible for this," said Indianapolis Metro police Sgt. Matt Mount.

Neighbors said Haddix, who was retired from Chrysler, meticulously cared for the home that he had lived in for nine years, and always had time to sit and talk.

"It's really hard. He was just like a brother. He visited with me every day," neighbor Bill Rinehart said.

Police said Monday that they are looking for a man and woman seen walking on Newton Avenue at about the same time Haddix was slain.

The man was described as white, between 40 to 45 years old, about 6 feet tall with dirty blonde hair. The woman was described as white and younger, with long dark hair.

Police stressed that the man and woman are not suspects but might have seen something related to the case.

Officials asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
