INDIANAPOLIS -- Thousands of Marion County homeowners will have to pay their property tax catch-up bills in full, after their rebate checks have bounced back. The county's auditor's office has received more than 5,000 checks back in the mail, with hundreds coming in each day, 6News' Norman Cox reported.Deputy Auditor Shirley Mizen said the staff expected to get some back, but was surprised by the high number.
Now, workers will make another attempt to verify that the person is a homeowner who is entitled to a rebate, and where he or she actually lives.Depending on the amount of the check, Mizen said there are various time limits on how long the county has to keep looking for the rightful owner. Eventually, all undeliverable cash will wind up in the Attorney General's Unclaimed Property Fund. The checks average about $241 each, Mizen said. The property tax catch-up bills are due Thursday.
