Woman Arrested In Fatal Shooting

4 Children At Home When Woman Shot

UPDATED: 6:30 pm EDT July 9, 2008

A woman was arrested on a murder charge Wednesday, hours after another woman was fatally shot at a home on Indianapolis' northeast side.

The shooting happened at about 9 a.m. in a home in the 3300 block of Sherman Drive, police said.

Latonya Jones, 35, was found dead in the home from apparent gun shot wounds, police said.

Four children – ages 4, 7, 9, and 11 – were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

One of the children called the victim's sister, who then called police.

Shortly after the shooting, Sherri Ferrell, 45, was taken into custody. Police said Ferrell did not have a prior criminal history.

Jones' sister, Sandra Johnson, said she didn't know why anyone would shoot her sister.

"I don't have a clue. She's a beautiful person. She didn't deserve it," Johnson said.

Police said the victim and shooter were acquaintances, but they did not release further information about how they knew each other.

"The thing that really disappoints me the most is this kind of violence … is not reflective of our city," said Indianapolis Metro Police Chief Michael Spears. "It's not reflective of the solid citizens who live here."

Wednesday's fatal shooting marked the 12th homicide in the city since June 30.
