More Charges For Man Suspected In Officer Shooting

Brian Reese Charged With Murder Of East Side Couple

UPDATED: 9:24 pm EDT July 16, 2008

The man police said shot an IMPD officer is now facing more murder charges, accused of killing an elderly man and now two others.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi announced new charges against Brian Reese, 36, during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Reese faces two counts of murder and one count of carrying handgun without a license in the shooting deaths of Crystal Jenkins, 28, and Demetrius Allen, 22, on July 8.

The pair was found dead in a home in the 200 block of Hendricks Place on the city's east side after police said they received an anonymous tip.

Investigators said Reese went to the house to buy crack cocaine, then killed Jenkins and Allen and ransacked the home.

Ballistic tests indicate the gun used to kill Allen was the same gun used to shoot Fishburn, Brizzi said.

Earlier on Wednesday, not-guilty pleas were entered on behalf of Reese, his father, Paul Reese, 65, and Brian Reese's girlfriend, Lona Bishop, 24, in the July 6 slaying of Clifford Haddix.

The 69-year-old was found dead by neighbors in his home in the 3000 block of East Newton Street.

Investigators said Brian Reese was the triggerman in that slaying, although they said he communicated with his father by walkie-talkie during the killing.

Brian Reese was charged with murder, robbery, burglary and carrying a handgun without a license for that crime. Paul Reese was charged with murder, robbery and burglary, while Bishop was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary.

Bishop, who has a 1-year-old child with Brian Reese, might be the key to the prosecution's case, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

"Lona intends to fully cooperate with the prosecutor's office," said Marty Solomon, Bishop's attorney. "She's absolutely devastated about the events that took place."

"I don't really want to say specifically that she's been cooperating or not cooperating," Brizzi said. "This is a very intense case, and we'll be working diligently with all of the witnesses to get the convictions that justice demands."

Brian Reese, Paul Reese and Bishop were kept separate and were ordered by the court not to contact one another. A jury trial was set for Sept. 29.

An initial hearing has not been set for the most recent charges in Jenkins' and Allen's killings.

Brian Reese is also a suspect in the July 10 shooting of Indianapolis Metro police Officer Jason Fishburn, who was shot in the head and chest before officers apprehended Reese. Because he is held without bond, Brizzi said there is no urgency in filing charges in the officer shooting.
