INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Jason Fishburn, shot in the line of duty, is recovering from a second surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. His family tells 6News he went back into surgery Thursday afternoon to remove fluids that had collected in a pocket following his original surgery shortly after the shooting July 10.IMPD Sgt. Matthew Mount said Fishburn emerged from surgery early Thursday evening with no complications.Mount said Fishburn had been completely taken off all sedation drugs prior to the surgery, and had been showing good progress with nurse therapists, including responding to verbal commands.Fishburn had also been breathing on his own after pulling out his breathing tube Wednesday evening. He was expected to continue breathing on his own after Thursday's surgery.Fishburn was shot twice -- once in the head and once in the chest -- while trying to apprehend a man wanted in a slaying on the city's east side. The wound to his chest was less severe because the bullet was deflected by his bullet proof vest.Fishburn underwent brain surgery shortly after the shooting and has been recovering at Wishard.
