Newcomer Gets GOP Nod In 7th District Race

Gabrielle Campo Will Take On André Carson

Political newcomer Gabrielle Campo won her party’s nomination for the 7th District congressional race at the Republican caucus held Friday night.

Campo won on the second ballot with 40 of the caucus’ 77 votes, party officials said.

The social worker and relative political newcomer will take on Democrat André Carson in November.

It comes after the party's presumptive candidate, Jon Elrod, dropped out of the race last month, after losing to Carson in a special election in March.

Campo beat out three other candidates -- Eli Lilly employee Patrick O'Connor, former City-County councilor Ray Irvin and Kevin Green. "Gabrielle is young, energetic and capable of waging a spirited challenge against Andre Carson," said 7th Congressional District Republican Chairman John Hammond in a news release Friday.

Campo said she will focus on issues including energy and education, and she said would detail her plans sometime after Friday’s caucus.
