Help For Wounded Officer Pours In

Community Supports Officer Shot In Head

Help continues to pour in for the family of an Indianapolis Metro police officer who was shot in the head while trying to track down a man sought in another killing earlier this month.

Officer Jason Fishburn faces a long and expensive road to recovery, and those who attended a fundraiser Sunday at the Tye Dye Grill hoped to help in any way they could, 6News' Cheryl Jackson reported.

"When something like that happens for us and it's one of the worst times in our lives, it's nice to see the public … come out to support us," said IMPD Sgt. Rick Snyder.

Dozens helped raise money by taking part in a dunk tank, eating hot dogs and strawberry shortcake and listening to a live band.

"We felt like it would be important to roll call here to show our appreciation to the folks not only at the grill, but all the folks who came out here to raise some money for the Fishburn family," Snyder said.

Several people donated blood in the officer's name.

"He is doing it for us every day. They all are," said Jan Dye, who organized the fundraiser. "This is the least we can do for them to show them some support because they work hard for us every day."

Organizers said they hope the event sparked an organized effort against crime on Indianapolis' east side.

"Instead of having a black eye and always something terrible happening … we need to come together as a community, as business owners," Dye said.

About $4,000 was raised for the family and about 30 pints of blood was collected.
