Wounded Officer Utters First Words Since Shooting

Wounded Indianapolis Metro police Officer Jason Fishburn uttered his first words Monday evening following his shooting more than two weeks ago, which included the revelation, "Oh my God, I want to go fishing!"

Fishburn's family said his uncle had promised to take him fishing when he recovered from the July 10 shooting.

Fishburn was transferred to a rehabilitation center Monday after spending 18 days in the intensive care unit at Wishard Memorial Hospital.

Fishburn's family said he was also able to recite the alphabet and count.

His father, IMPD Sgt. Dennis Fishburn, said prayers have worked and that he would like them to continue.

"We believe he was processing how to speak again, 'Oh my God,' twice," Fishburn said. Then he told his wife, 'I love you,' and then he said, 'I want to fish.'"

Doctors said Fishburn likely has a long road to recovery after he was shot in the head, but doctors told Dennis Fishburn they are stunned by the rapid improvement.

Another fundraiser is also being planned to assist Fishburn's family as he continues his recovery.

The all-day event will be held at the Vollrath Tavern at 118 E. Palmer Street on Aug. 16 beginning at noon.

Organizers said there will be live bands, food and a silent auction. The tavern will donate a percentage of the net proceeds to Fishburn's family.

More information can be found on the venue's Web site.
