INDIANAPOLIS -- A proposal to limit the use of fireworks in Marion County was put on hold Tuesday night as the City-County Council committee considers it.The use of fireworks could be limited to a few major holidays if the ordinance is approved. A committee vote is possible on Monday.Right now in Marion County, anyone can set off fireworks any day of the year, during certain hours.Councilor Ed Coleman proposed an ordinance that would ban the use of consumer-grade fireworks in Marion County except for the weeks surrounding Independence Day and on New Year's Eve, 6News' Ericka Flye reported."There's a certain point where it's recreational fun for the holiday and there's a certain point where it's just being a bad neighbor," Coleman said. "This basically says, 'Hey you guys, let's be polite, let's not do this. You do have neighbors and they do deserve a little bit of peace and quiet.'"Coleman said he does not want to ban the use of sparklers or other products that don't make a lot of noise. The fine for breaking the ordinance would range from $100 to $2,500, Coleman said.If the committee approves the measure, it would be sent to the full council for a final vote.
