The man accused of shooting Indianapolis police officer Jason Fishburn was charged Thursday in connection with the crime.

Brian Reese, 36, was charged with attempted murder, carrying a handgun without a license and resisting law enforcement.

According to the probable cause affidavit, officers were trying to apprehend Reese on July 10 in connection with a July 6 robbery and killing when Reese and his mother took off in a van, leading police on a short chase. Reese jumped out of the vehicle and was pursued by Fishburn. Prosecutors said Reese then shot Fishburn in the head and in the chest.

Reese was shot in the shoulder when officers returned fire, police said.

Since his arrest shortly after the shooting, Reese has been charged in connection with three killings.

He was charged with murder, robbery, burglary and carrying a handgun without a license for the July 6 robbery and slaying of Clifford Haddix, 69. A jury trial was set for Sept. 29 in that case.

Reese also faces two counts of murder and one count of carrying handgun without a license in the shooting deaths of Crystal Jenkins, 28, and Demetrius Allen, 22, on July 8.

An initial hearing had not yet been set for the latest charges related to Fishburn's shooting.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said at a news conference Thursday that his office had not decided whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

"That decision has not yet been made. We're continuing to explore that option along with life without parole as well," Brizzi said.

Reese's mother -- Barbara Reese, 66 -- was also charged Thursday with felony resisting law enforcement. Her next court appearance will be a pre-trial conference at 9 a.m. on Aug. 18.

Fishburn was transferred to a rehabilitation center earlier this week, his family said.
