Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard was recovering from knee surgery Wednesday, officials said.

Ballard underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, spokeswoman Lacey Everett said in a statement.

Ballard was taken to a hospital July 25 after officials said he woke up and couldn't walk because of pain in his knee.

Ballard spokesman Marcus Barlow said knee pain had been a reoccurring problem for Ballard.
