INDIANAPOLIS -- About 150 Segway enthusiasts are in Indianapolis this weekend for Segway Fest 2008 and the Woz Challenge Cup, the largest gathering of owners and enthusiasts of the two-wheel electric vehicle. The Woz Challenge polo tournament was created by Steve Wozniak, one of the co-founders of Apple Computer."Playing Segway polo is one of my favorite pasttimes, but using the Segway is part of my real life at home and part of my travel life," Wozniak said. "I'm very close to the Segway."The Segway, which has been around since 2001, has a relatively small but enthusiastic base of users, 6News' Julie Pursley reported. The personal vehicle is pretty easy to ride. It basically follows body motions and balances itself. Top speed is a brisk 12 mph."The gyros are balancing it. It's got a computer in it that thinks about 100 times a second. So, as I lean forward, it goes forward. As I stand up straight, it stops," said William Hopper, a Segway owner.Aside from recreational use, some owners use their Segways to commute."I live in a small town -- 2,000 people," said Wendell Bias, of Liberty, Ind. "I have a small business ... a half-mile from my home. I drive it to work."Several Segway enthusiasts came to Indianapolis from out of the country."There's quite some interest now. People are finding out that Segways are very convenient, cheaper than going by car -- no traffic jams," said Florin Van Slingerland, who is visiting from The Netherlands.Segways don't use fuel and are powered by rechargeable electricity. Festival organizers stressed that the personal transporter is both fun to use and environmentally friendly.Segways range in price from about $4,500 to $5,800.
