A construction worker narrowly escaped a crane collapse early Saturday morning.

The incident happened at about 7 a.m. at the site of a bridge being built on the Monon Greenway.

Police said the construction worker was sitting in his truck when the crane started to fall toward him.

"He said he heard the crane start to crash, and it gave him enough time to get out of the vehicle right before it landed on the cab of the pickup truck," said Carmel police Lt. David Strong.

There was no immediate word on what caused the collapse.

Indiana law does not require crane operators to be licensed and leaves daily inspections up to operators and contractors.
