Police: Woman Came Forward After Man Linked To Missing Student
POSTED: 8:01 p.m. EST October 11, 2002
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A suspect in the 2000 disappearance of Indiana University student Jill Behrman has been charged in a 2001 rape case.
Uriah Clouse, 26, of Bloomington, is accused of raping a Bloomington woman at her home in May 2001.
Clouse (pictured, left) was charged with rape Thursday. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf during an initial hearing Friday.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the woman reported the incident this year after seeing media reports that Clouse was a suspect in Behrman's disappearance and in jail on unrelated charges.
The woman didn't immediately report the rape because she feared Clouse, according to the affidavit. Once she learned that Clouse was in jail, she felt safe enough to go to police, the affidavit says.
Clouse is jail on a charge unrelated to the rape case or the Behrman disappearance. He has not been charged in the Behrman case.
Police have said Clouse is a suspect in the Behrman case, but won't comment on his connection to her disappearance.
Behrman, 19 when she disappeared, was last seen riding her bike near Bloomington in May 2000.
Police believe Behrman was struck but not killed by a vehicle. They believe she was taken to a remote section of Salt Creek in Monroe County and murdered.
Police believe Behrman's body was put into the creek. A search of the creek yielded important evidence in the case, but not her remains, investigators have said.
