Police: Van Was Likely Not Shooting Target

A 6-year-old boy was shot on Indianapolis' northeast side Wednesday night as he sat in his dad's van on the way back from football practice.

The boy, who wasn't immediately identified, was struck in the shoulder. He was taken to Riley Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday evening, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

The shooting happened on Meadowlark Drive just after 5 p.m. Kylah Johnson said she rushed out of her apartment complex after she heard the shot.

"A man in the van has his son in his arms and he had been shot. That's when I went in the house and called police," Johnson said. "I went and got a towel and told them to apply pressure to the boy's back."

Police said other children were also in the van, but no one else was injured. According to investigators, the bullet that struck the boy went through the rear of the van and back seat before hitting him.

Police said they are looking for a burgundy Chevrolet Trailblazer or Ford SUV.

"We don't have a suspect," said Indianapolis Metro police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "We do believe this was not the target of the shooter."

Police said they think the shooter might have been aiming at a man who was on a scooter. That man was taken in for questioning as police canvassed the neighborhood in hopes of finding out what led to the shooting.
