Town Orders Demolition Of Burned Apartments
No Clean Up After June 30 Fire

SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- Speedway has ordered the owners of an apartment complex gutted by a fire June 30 to demolish the facility by Sept. 8.A chain-link fence now surrounds the destroyed building at the International Village complex, but town officials want all of the charred debris removed, citing health and safety concerns.

"We've not only requested clean up of the fire site, but we've also provided a prioritized list of violations that must be addressed in the remaining residences and apartment grounds," said Barbara Lawrence, town manager.Officials said the complex has been a source of persistent problems and that they are requiring the owners to fix safety issues in other buildings.Thirty-six apartment units were gutted in the blaze.
