'Daddy, I Got Shot' 6-Year-Old Struck By Stray Bullet

Boy Shot As Family Was Headed To Football Practice

A 6-year-old boy was recovering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder Thursday after he was struck by what police said was a stray bullet.

The shooting happened Wednesday evening in the 9300 block of Meadowlark Drive on the city's east side.

Raquan Jordan was riding in a van with several other children on his way to football practice when a shot rang out, piercing the vehicle and hitting him in the shoulder, police said.

"All we heard was a shot, nothing else. I know my son was screaming, 'Daddy, I got shot,'" Raquan's father, Fuss Jordan, who was driving the van, told 6News' Derrik Thomas.

Police do not believe the shooter was aiming at the van.

"We do have a witness in the area who has given us information that says another person was the target of that shot, and not the van," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "We don't believe the van was involved in anyway. It was just inadvertently struck."

Thompson said police recovered a spent shell casing at the scene, but do not have any suspects.

"What do you expect? It's the ghetto. It could be anywhere. You just got to be careful. We was an innocent bystander," Fuss Jordan said. "[Raquan's] breathing, he's well, he's good. I'm happy."

Doctors did not remove the bullet from Raquan shoulder, but said he is expected to make a full recovery.
