A Noblesville man who stole nearly $112,000 from a charity he helped to run was sentenced Friday to 20 months in prison.

Lance Busby, 35, pleaded guilty to forging checks drawn on the account of River Clean-Up, Inc., a nonprofit group in which he served as vice president, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Vaughn.

Beginning in late 2003, Busby forged about 35 checks totaling $111,951 in charity funds that he then signed over to himself, his wife, his Noblesville-based company -- Scuba Quest -- and company employees.

The state police investigation did not reveal any evidence that Busby's wife, any members of his family or any of Scuba Quest's employees knew anything about the forged checks, Vaughn said.

Busby was sentenced Friday to 20 months in prison and two years probation. He was also ordered to pay back the money he took from River Clean-Up.
