Police: 50 Homes Hit By Teenage Vandals

Damage Estimated In Thousands

Two 15-year-old boys were arrested after more than 50 Kokomo families returned from the holiday weekend to find their homes and vehicles vandalized, police said.

Kokomo police were called to the Bon Air Mobile Home Court early Sunday morning on the report of widespread vandalism, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

There were at least 50 reports of vandalism, ranging from slashed tires to damaged boat covers, swimming pools and vehicles, said Kokomo police Lt. Don Whitehead.

"It's Labor Day weekend and we had plans with the family and stuff, and it was on a Sunday so we couldn't fix it and then [Monday] we couldn't fix it either, so I was a little upset about it," said vandalism victim Kathryn Strite.

Two 15-year-old boys -- one of whom lives in the mobile home park -- were arrested Sunday and preliminarily charged with felony mischief, Whitehead said.

"It's not fair to us. Even if we have insurance, it's a deductible. It's not fair to us people," said victim Barb Edwards. "[The parents of the teens] need to come up with some money to help out. Parents are responsible for their children."

The stepfather of one of the boys told Spencer on Tuesday that the teen had sneaked out while his mother was at work.

"All we can say is sorry," Charlie Thieke said. When asked if he thought his stepson had learned a lesson, he said, "After they go before the judge, he'll probably give them a lesson."

The teens are due in court Wednesday morning. The management at the mobile home park Tuesday told the mother of the teen who lives there that she is welcome to stay, but that he would not be allowed to live in the park.

Police estimate the damage to be in the thousands.
