An Indianapolis police officer shot in the line of duty in the beginning of July walked out of a rehabilitation hospital on his own Thursday.

Jason Fishburn had been hospitalized -- first at Wishard Hospital and then at The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana -- since he was shot in the head while chasing a robbery suspect on the city's east side on July 10.

Thursday, Fishburn left the rehabilitation center, walking out of the building under his own power, said Sgt. Matthew Mount.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Public Safety Director Scott Newman and IMPD Chief Michael Spears, along with Fishburn's wife and family member ands and coworkers were on hand at the hospital.

"He walked out on his own two feet to the door. He pushed everybody away and said, 'I want to get out on my own,'" Ballard said.

After Fishburn left the building, his supervisor called over the police radio and advised that one of his officers was still unaccounted for. Fishburn then radioed back, saying he was making back in service and going home, Mount said.

Fishburn is scheduled to attend Thursday's Indiana Fever game with his family as a special guest of the Simon family where his parents will accept an award on his behalf at halftime. A portion of ticket sales for the game will go toward Fishburn's ongoing recovery, Mount said.

Fishburn attended a bike ride held in his honor on Sunday.
