Indiana Identity Theft Unit Touts Success

Group Resolves 151 Cases For More Than $415,000

POSTED: 2:56 pm EDT September 24, 2008

In its first six months of existence, the Indiana Identity Theft Unit has solved 151 cases and recovered more than $415,000 for identity theft victims.

The Attorney General's Office said Wednesday that three people have been arrested within the last few months in connection with cases of stolen identity, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.

Ivan Morenos has at least three other names. Morenos is incarcerated in Hendricks County after he used someone else's Social Security number to get a job, Attorney General Steve Carter said. A complaint to the state's ID theft unit led to Morenos' arrest.

Thieves regularly steal personal information to open credit card accounts or utility services. The unit investigates complaints and helps consumers with hands-on assistance.

One of the largest amounts of money recovered involves someone who lives in Marion County. A thief using stolen ID took out a home loan in the victim's name for $135,000. That victim's money was returned.

Many of the cases are not easily resolved, but there is now a concerted effort to return stolen money to rightful owners.

"We've been doing that to help re-establish their good credit, make sure records are clear and don't reflect fraudulent charges on their accounts," Carter said.

The office is currently investigating more than 125 cases involving identity theft.

Consumers can file a complaint by calling 800-382-5516 during standard business hours.
