GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Two people were killed and two more were injured in a grisly wreck involving a van, pickup truck, car and FedEx tractor-trailer on Interstate 65 in Johnson County early Thursday morning.

The wreck happened at about 6:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-65 at mile marker 96, about three miles south of Greenwood and just north of the Whiteland exit.

Indiana State Police said a southbound FedEx tractor-trailer that had two trailers hit a large wheel lost control and went through the median into the northbound lanes.

Three northbound vehicles then struck one of the semitrailers. One of the victims was identified as Vania Shields, 33, of Franklin. Shields was a Wayne Township paramedic and was going to work when the wreck happened.

"She was a very happy person," said Wayne Township fire Capt. Troy Wymer. "Vania had been with us less than a year but had made a great impact on the emergency medical system that we have and on her co-workers and employees."

The other victim who died was identified as Charles Gould III, 28, of Whiteland, who worked as a forensic scientist at the Marion County Crime Lab.

"Chuck was a fairly new employee here. He'd been here for about five months," said Ronald Blacklock, director of the Marion County Crime Lab. "He did quality work … good sense of humor."

Police said Shields' SUV and Gould's car both hit the trailer head-on and that both died instantly.

Two additional victims, who were in a pickup truck, were taken to Methodist Hospital in stable condition.

Police said the tractor-trailer's driver, Michael Sumner, of Seymour, was not seriously injured but was shaken by what happened. He was not charged.
