INDIANAPOLIS -- Word of the indictment of two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves spread quickly through the local sports world Thursday, and fans have differing views about his future.

On "'The Drive' With JMV" on Sports Radio 1260 WNDE, fans sounded off on Castroneves' predicament. Most gave the racecar driver and "Dancing With The Stars" champion the benefit of the doubt.

"Probably the victim of a bad accountant or shady accountant or something like that," said one caller. "He's a stand up guy."

Show host JMV said Castroneves' indictment on tax evasion charges stunned him.

"I was shocked like everybody else, because Helio is the nicest guy you're ever going to meet," he said.

Downtown, people who 6News spoke to had a different take.

"A common thing in this day and age … more money, more problems," said one person.

"Some people just don't want to pay their taxes," said another person. "I guess in the end, he'll get what was coming to him. He shouldn't have any trouble paying them."

Most people said they will reserve judgment and wait to hear what comes out of court proceedings.
