After heavy criticism from Democrats, a Republican brochure containing a fuzzy photo of U.S. Rep. Julia Carson has been pulled.

The campaign brochure was for Lawrence Mayor Tom Schneider's campaign. Schneider, a Republican, is running for Marion County sheriff.

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson had called the use of the photo "outright racism."

The image of Carson, a Democrat, appears next to a picture of Schneider's opponent in the sheriff's race, Democrat Frank Anderson, and former President Bill Clinton. Above the pictures is the headline, "The Frank Anderson Team."

The flier was to be distributed to polling places throughout the county for Tuesday's elections.

But after hearing complaints that Carson's picture made her look bad, Schneider called the county's Republican headquarters and asked that the flier not be distributed, county GOP Chairman John Keeler said Monday afternoon.

"I'm not going to distribute it at the request of the Schneider campaign," Keeler said. "The Schneider campaign has apologized to Representative Carson for using less than a flattering picture of her."

Tom Schneider Campaign BrochureSchneider's campaign manager, David Brooks, called the fuzzy picture of Carson (pictured, right) a "technical printing error."

Democratic leaders also for an emergency meeting Monday afternoon with officials from the Marion County Election Board because the flier didn't have any text saying who paid for it.

First printings of the brochure did not say who paid for it, but once the mistake was discovered, the information was placed on reprints, Keeler said.

"It should have had a disclaimer on it," Keeler said. "It was a mistake -- I think an innocent one, a technical mistake.

"Clearly there was no intention to deceive, because (the Schneider campaign) had their address on there. Clearly (it was) a Schneider piece, (but) clearly it should have had a disclaimer."

The election board's chairman told RTV6 that no emergency meeting would be held. The issue, he said, would be addressed during a regular meeting after the election.

Carson, who represents a district that covers most of Marion County, is running for re-election. Challenging her on Tuesday's ballot are Brose McVey, a Republican, and Andrew Horning, a Libertarian.
