POSTED: 12:38 pm EDT October 6, 2008

A man was killed early Monday morning when the tractor-trailer he was driving went off the road and struck a bridge support in Clay County, police said.

Ronald W. Frazier, 48, of Nokomis, Ill., died in the crash, which happened just after 6 a.m. in the east bound lanes of Interstate 70 at mile marker 29.

Indiana State Police said the truck, which was carrying a box trailer, went off the right side of I-70, into a grass ditch, concrete culvert and earth embankment before striking a concrete underpass support at the Clay and Putnam County line.

Frazier, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck was hauling glass that spilled onto the ditch and road. Crews spent several hours cleaning the glass and diesel that spilled in the crash.

An engineering technician from the Indiana Department of Transportation surveyed the bridge support and found no initial indication of structural damage.

Eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for several hours as investigators tried to determine what caused the crash and crews cleaned up the scene.
