Autopsy Scheduled For Tuesday

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Police and campus officials are involved in an investigation of the death of an 18-year-old Wabash College freshman at a fraternity house over the weekend.Johnny D. Smith, 18, of Tucson, Ariz., was found unconscious early Sunday morning after a party at the Delta Tau Delta house, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.Campus officials said that in his short time at Wabash, Smith had made many friends and was well liked."This is a very hard thing. One of the great parts of my job as president of Wabash is that I get to know all the students, or many of them," said Pat White. "The loss of any one of them is an incredible tragedy."Mike Raters, Wabash's dean of students, said it is not yet clear if alcohol was served at the homecoming weekend bash."Right now, I've got some conflicting reports," Raters said. "It would not be against our policy for alcohol to be present at the fraternity house as long as it was being consumed by those of age. If it was consumed or made available to those under age, then we'll deal with that swiftly and decisively."The investigation will also look into whether Smith's death could have anything to do with his status as a fraternity pledge or any possible initiations. An autopsy scheduled for Tuesday might reveal some clues about how Smith died, but toxicology results won't be back for a couple of weeks.A funeral for Smith will be held in Arizona, but college officials are working with his parents to organize a memorial service on campus.
