Frat Where Student Found Dead Ordered To Suspend Operations

New Member Found Dead After Party On Sunday

The fraternity where an 18-year-old Wabash College freshman was found dead over the weekend was ordered to cease operations on Thursday, fraternity officials said.

The national Delta Tau Delta organization directed the college's chapter to halt all formal chapter activities, including social events and ritual activities involving new members, said fraternity spokesman Christopher Martz. Wabash College officials said the school has also suspended the chapter during the investigation.

Johnny D. Smith, 18, of Tucson, Ariz. -- a freshman and new member of the fraternity -- was found unconscious early Sunday morning after a party at the Delta Tau Delta house, police said.

Police and campus officials are investigating the incident, and fraternity officials said they are fully cooperating.

“There are ongoing investigations by the fraternity, the Wabash College administration and civil authorities,” said Jim Russell, executive vice president of the national fraternity organization. “At the same time, the primary focus of these students is their academic responsibility. Our desire is for the students to focus their attention on academics and pay close heed to their physical and mental health during these difficult times.”

Mike Raters, Wabash's dean of students, said it is not yet clear if alcohol was served at the homecoming weekend bash.

"Right now, I've got some conflicting reports," Raters said earlier this week. "It would not be against our policy for alcohol to be present at the fraternity house as long as it was being consumed by those of age. If it was consumed or made available to those under age, then we'll deal with that swiftly and decisively."

The investigation will also look into whether Smith's death could have anything to do with his status as a fraternity pledge or any possible initiations.

A memorial service for Smith was held on campus on Thursday. His funeral will be held in Arizona.
