A man driving a motor scooter died Friday night after he lost control of his bike, police said.

The accident happened just before 8 p.m. in the 5400 block of East 56th Street, said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson.

Lee Sykes, 49, of Indianapolis, was headed westbound on 56th Street when he lost control of his motor scooter and went down, striking the pavement, Thompson said. He was not wearing a helmet.

He was transported to Community North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they were not sure what caused Sykes to lose control of the scooter.
