Former Church Worker Pleads Guilty To Sex With Girl

Plea Agreement Would Cap Sentence At 7 Years

POSTED: 6:33 am EDT October 14, 2008

A former worker at a church-run children's home pleaded guilty Monday to charges she had sex with a 15-year-old female runaway.

Stephanie M. Rogers, 36, of Anderson pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct with a minor Monday in Madison Superior Court. If Judge Dennis Carroll accepts the plea agreement, her prison time would be capped at seven years.

Deputy Prosecutor Rudolph Pyle III said he would seek a 15-year sentence, with seven years served and the remainder suspended. The Class B felony is punishable by a six- to 20-year sentence.

"I just think it's best for all parties," Rogers' attorney, John Reeder of Anderson, said of the agreement.

Rogers is accused of having a sexual relationship over several days in January with the runaway from the Indiana United Methodist Children's Home in Lebanon.

Investigators allege Rogers was working at the children's home when she first met the girl. Officials at the home said she had since been fired.

Police and prosecutors say Rogers gave the girl a ride to her Anderson home after the youth ran away on Jan. 6. Rogers said she had let the girl stay at her residence for several days and tried to help her. Police found the girl at Rogers' home on Jan. 10 after discovering the two had communicated online.

The children's home treats youth with emotional and behavioral problems.

"Anyone that is in a position of trust like that has to know a portion of their sentence will be served with the Department of Correction," Pyle said.
