An assistant football coach at Fishers High School who used to play for the Colts was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Wednesday.

Jeff Burris, 36, was stopped at 101st Street and College Avenue around 1:30 a.m. after an officer saw him driving his Land Rover backwards on 106th Street in Carmel, said Hamilton County Sheriff's Department Deputy Vicki Dunbar.

According to the police report, Burris admitting to drinking earlier in the evening, but refused a Breathalyzer and failed a field sobriety test, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

"When the officer spoke with Mr. Burris, he noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and Mr. Burris admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening," Dunbar said.

Burris bonded out of the Hamilton County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

Fishers' school officials confirmed that Burris was a part-time employee and had been an assistant coach since July. Officials would not comment on his arrest or his current status, saying that it was a personnel matter.

Burris is the second Fishers High School employee to be arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in the past year. Former principal Scott Syverson resigned as board members were considering canceling his contract after he was caught on a police officer's in-car camera in an alleged drunken driving incident last December.
