A drunken driver had parked his pickup truck on Interstate 65 and passed out early Saturday morning, Indiana State Police said.

Troopers were called to the southbound lanes at mile marker 167 in Tippecanoe County at about 2:30 a.m. when someone reported a possible vehicle fire.

Officers said the truck's motor was still running and that the driver, Steven Birchfield, 26, of Kinde, Mich., was slumped over the wheel.

ISP Sgt. Kim Riley said Birchfield awoke as troopers tried to break out the truck's window to check on him. Troopers said Birchfield then tried to drive away before he stopped a short distance away.

Birchfield was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was held early Saturday at the Tippecanoe County Jail.
