Police Investigate 11-Month-Old's Death

Investigators Say Boy Suffered Severe Head Injury

Police are investigating the death of an 11-month-old boy who was found unconscious and unresponsive at his home early Sunday morning.

Malaki Lindley was taken to a Kokomo hospital after a caregiver -- a friend of the boy's mother, according to family members -- made the discovery at the home in the 600 block of South Washington Street, police said.

The boy was later taken by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died Sunday evening.

"The caregiver of this 11-month-old child took him unconscious and unresponsive, showed up at Howard Regional Health Systems here in Kokomo," said Kokomo police Lt. Don Whitehead. "They initially treated the child and realized he had a severe head injury."

The boy's aunt, Whitney Lindley, told 6News that her brother, who was separated from the boy's mother, is taking the child's death very hard.

"He's in pain. That was his little boy," Lindley said.

A family member also said the toddler's mother was at work at the time he was found unconscious.

Neighbors said the family recently moved to the area and few people knew them.

An autopsy was being conducted Monday in Indianapolis to determine the cause of death. If the results indicate criminal wrongdoing, charges could be filed as soon as Tuesday.

Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. They said everyone who has been questioned has been cooperative.
