INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police shot and then used a Taser gun on a man who, with several other men, tried to break into an apartment on the northwest side, police said.Police were called to the Brighton Park apartments, near 79th Street and Harcourt Road, just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.Officers said at least one man was inside the apartment and two others were outside.
Police chased the suspects on foot. Two of them jumped into a car and tried to drive away, crashing into other cars and speeding toward two officers."He was trying to speed away, lost control and started coming after the officers, directly at them," said Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "At that point, they felt like their lives were in danger and fired several shots at the vehicle … hitting the driver several times."Police said French Mason, 19, was struck in the head and chest but still resisted when he was pulled from the car, so officers administered the stun gun.Mason was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition early Wednesday afternoon.Police also arrested a 17-year-old boy in the incident. A third person was detained and later released without charges.Police said Mason was wearing body armor. He was arrested on charges of burglary, resisting law enforcement and unlawful use of body armor while committing a felony.The 17-year-old boy was arrested on charges of burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.Police identified the officers involved as Robert McNeil and Adam Lee. The shooting remains under investigation.
