Long Thompson Named As Possible Agriculture Secretary

INDIANAPOLIS -- Democrat Jill Long Thompson may have lost her bid for governor, but she could be on her way to Washington as part of President-elect Barack Obama's cabinet, the Associated Press reported.The former Indiana congresswoman is mentioned as a possible contender for the spot of Agriculture Secretary. Long Thompson's name is listed along with five others -- President of National Farmers Union Tom Buis, former Texas Rep. Charles Stenholm, South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff Sebelius.

The position is one of 13 still undecided in Obama's cabinet.Long Thompson lost the governor's race in November to incumbent Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels by a large margin.She served as a representative from the 4th Congressional District from 1988 to 1994. She was appointed by then-President Bill Clinton as Under Secretary for Rural Economic and Community Development in 1995, where she served until the start of George W. Bush's administration in 2001.A call to Long Thompson's home in Argos, Ind. had not been returned Wednesday evening.
