BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Department of Labor is looking into whether a Monroe County sheriff's deputy had required safety equipment when she was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.Deputy Sarah Jones, 27, died Oct. 19 after being hit by an SUV in an Oct. 17 crash west of Bloomington. Indiana State Police said Jones was not wearing a reflective safety vest at the time of the accident, which was blamed on a distracted 16-year-old driver. The teen was not charged in the crash.Deputy labor commissioner Sean Keefer said the office is evaluating the sheriff's department's safety program.
Federal law requires that workplace-related deaths be reported to the Department of Labor within eight hours. Jones's death was not reported until two days after her death.Jones was the first Monroe County sheriff's deputy to die in the line of duty.
