INDIANAPOLIS -- Preliminary figures released Friday show that Indiana's unemployment rate increased last month at a faster pace than the nation as a whole. The Bureau of Labor statistics show the unemployment rate in Indiana for November was 7.1 percent, up from 6.4 percent in October. Nationwide, the unemployment rate grew from 6.5 percent to 6.7 percent last month."It's come with real suddenness here if you haven't watched as closely as I do. I can't forget that just eight months ago we were at essentially full employment in this state -- 4.4 percent," Gov. Mitch Daniels said during a news conference at the Statehouse Friday. "So we are suffering in a special way, I think, because it is so hard and so sudden."
Indiana lost 12,800 jobs in November. Many of the job losses were in the automotive and recreational vehicle industries.Overall, 37 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, five states registered decreases, and eight states had no change, the bureau said.
