INDIANAPOLIS -- A 15-year-old girl was shot after a man opened fire following a road rage incident outside an Indianapolis shopping mall on Wednesday evening. The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. outside the Burlington Coat Factory at Washington Square Mall, said Sgt. Matthew Mount.Investigators said a 17-year-old girl was dropping off her sister at the mall when she pulled out in front of a man in an SUV, forcing him to swerve into the other lane.
The girl -- who had a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old girl in the car at the time -- told police the man threw a cup at her vehicle and then followed her around the mall parking lot until they were back in front of Burlington Coat Factory. That’s when the girl said she looked back and saw the man lean forward and then the rear driver’s side passenger window blew out and the man drove off.The 15-year-old passenger -- Shanita Johnson -- was shot in the left clavicle. She was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition.Johnson’s 11-year-old sister, while talking to detectives at the hospital, discovered a bullet in her jacket, Mount said.Police said they were looking for a black Range Rover with two men inside. The men were described by police as black, one older and one younger. Police said they believed the shooter was about 5 feet 5 inches tall with a light-brown complexion and a goatee. Both men were said to be armed.Officers were canvassing the area Wednesday evening looking for the men.Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
