INDIANAPOLIS -- A reserve police officer shot a man during a traffic stop on the city's east side Saturday night, critically wounding the man.Indianapolis police said Officer Rex Singletary pulled over a red Mitsubishi Eclipse at about 10:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of North Post Road.Police said Domonic Norton (pictured), 20, reached around the middle console and acted suspicious as Singletary approached the car, prompting the officer to pull his handgun.
When Singletary got to the car, Norton made a sudden move with his hands toward the officer, after which Singletary shot Norton at close range, police said.Officers later determined that Norton was trying to toss what appeared to be crack cocaine from the car.Norton was taken to Methodist Hospital in critical but stable condition. Police determined that Norton had not been armed."When you are in that positions, the incident is reviewed as what the officer perceived … at that given moment at that given conditions," said Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "If the suspect in the vehicle would have been compliant … there would have been no issue."An internal investigation is under way.
