Networking Key In Economy Where Jobs Uncertain

Jobs Expert: Banks, Other Companies Willing To Help

As Indiana's unemployment rate continues to creep past the national average, many Hoosiers are stuck looking for a job in a struggling economy.

While the task may seem daunting, one local jobs expert told 6News' Renee Jameson that being proactive is the best approach.

"It's not sitting at home behind your desk in your underwear answering ads on Monster Career Builder. It's a networking market today. It's who you know," said President of Indiana-based Career Transition Strategies Timothy Dugger.

Dugger recommends Hoosiers looking for a job try to get ahead of the game, taking career tests to determine their next move and asking for help early on.

"Go ahead and call the banks and call the credit card companies. They'll work with you," he said.

One car company is adopting a similar motto -- certainty in uncertain times -- in an effort to reassure wary customers. Hyundai will cover the depreciation on a returned leased or financed vehicle for those who find themselves unable to make their car payments.

"In a situation where they've lost their jobs, maybe have fell ill or got hurt and are unable to work, it allows them to walk away without having a bunch of equity," said Trace Barrow of Indianapolis-based Bob Rohrman Auto Group.

The Hyundai Assurance Program provides 12 months of protection and covers up to $7500 of depreciation.

Dugger said there is still hope for those still searching for a dependable job. He said information technology and the healthcare industry are both flourishing, despite the recession.
