INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis police officer who was shot in the head in July 2008 as he pursued a man wanted on murder charges says his recovery has been nothing short of miraculous.Officer Jason Fishburn, 29, was rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital on July 10 and was given little hope for survival, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.Fishburn said he doesn't remember anything about the shooting and relies on the accounts of his father and others with the regard to that horrific day. After months of intense physical therapy, Jason is able to do minor chores around the house and enjoy time with his wife of six years, Tonya."I asked for him back and I didn't care how I got him back," she said. "I'm just so grateful.""I'm back stronger than ever," he said. "It's really good, I think."The community rallied around the wounded officer with numerous fundraisers and benefits. He has been honored by the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Fever and was presented with the department's Medal of Honor.More than anything, Fishburn's family credits prayer with helping Jason pull through with the odds stacked against him."Very grateful … for all the prayers, just really grateful for everything," he said."We can't express how grateful we are to this community," Tonya Fishburn said. "They have been there with us every step of the way, just supporting us and praying for us."Fishburn faces many challenges to get full control of his mind and body. He considers the most difficult hurdle his paralyzed right arm. Still, he's amazingly optimistic.A DNA scientist, Tonya Fishburn said she can't explain scientifically how he survived."It amazes me not only that he survived it, but how well he's doing and how well he's progressing. It's a miracle," she said. The couple knows the road ahead is going to be bumpy, and the possibility of Jason getting back into a police car to pursue criminals is unlikely, but it's still his dream."One day at a time … hopefully, I can get back to work," he said.
