It has been more than four decades since Indiana Democrats had a reason to party in Washington, D.C., like they did Monday night.

Spirits were high at the Indiana Inaugural Ball as the state's Democrats reveled in victory and prepared for Tuesday's inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, 6News' Todd Wallace reported.

Marie Symmes worked on the Obama campaign in Indiana, hoping to make the night a reality.

"It's just absolutely fantastic," she said. "Everybody knows everybody whether you've ever met them before."

Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy was on hand for the event, and just about everyone wanted a picture with him.

"This is pretty exciting, being here with all of the people of Indiana and witnessing a little history," Dungy said. "I am proud and excited for our country."

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh said the celebration showed how great America is and that the country lives up to its ideals.

"The nicest thing is the optimism and the hope, even in a very difficult time for our state and country," Bayh said. "People really do want to come together and try and make things better."

Bayh spent a lot of time campaigning with Obama in Indiana and elsewhere and was considered one of the frontrunners for vice president before Sen. Joe Biden was selected.

Republican Rep. Mike Pence was also at the ball to congratulate his friends on the other side of the aisle.

"Politics aside, every American should prayerfully welcome the inauguration of a new president," Pence said. "It's especially meaningful for us to do so with so many Hoosiers who are gathered here in Washington, D.C."

TheIndyChannel.com will stream inaugural events live Tuesday, and 6News will have complete coverage throughout the day.
