INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University police confirmed Wednesday that an officer had been dismissed in an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of city-issued computers.6News' Jack Rinehart reported that the investigation began at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department training facility and led police to take action against a Butler police officer and an officer with the Airport Police Department. The university released a statement on Wednesday saying that the officer, when presented with the evidence, resigned from the department.Indianapolis police said that five officers have been disciplined for inappropriate use of the laptops in their squad cars. Some officers wrote disparaging comments about supervisory officers, watched movies on laptops while on duty and visited Web pages prohibited under department policy, including social-networking sites and shopping sites, police said."We are watching for that. We are watching on the front end for certain electronic screens that would pop out at us and cause us to investigate," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Scott Newman. The police union sent out a letter last week reminding officers that computers are city property and are subject to electronic tracking."They're telling you that they want you to directly and narrowly relate that information to official business and guys just don't do that and they're getting caught up and paying the price for it," said local Fraternal Order of Police President Bill Owensby.Police said the investigation is in the hands of internal affairs and remains ongoing.
