INDIANAPOLIS -- A room full of everyday heroes gathered in downtown Indianapolis Friday night at a ceremony to honor those who went above and beyond to save a life. The Indianapolis Fire Department honored 129 men and women at the 17th-annual recognition ceremony, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.Three civilians were among those honored, including 12-year-old Anthony Hubbard who rushed to help 7-year-old Jason Cherry when he was hit with a flaming can of gasoline in October."We were told that if it had not been for his quick reaction, Jason wouldn't have made it," said his mother, Kimberly Strunk. "So we know that he's 100 percent the reason that Jason's alive."Anthony had a simpler take on his life-saving actions."I'm his friend. I, like, watch out for him and stuff," he said.Friday's ceremony also honored four medics from Engine 20, who were first on the scene the night that Indianapolis police Officer Jason Fishburn was shot in the head while pursuing a suspect."I did recognize him and it made it a little more difficult, but we kept our composure and did our job," said Emergency Medical Technician Nathan Hiestand."It was a little stressful. With a shooting, you don't know if the scene is safe," said EMT Julius Stovall. "I feel like I'm hired to do this. So if this is something that the city wants to do, that's fine. But I don't do it for the recognition. I just genuinely like to help."Fishburn is now recovering at home.6News' Jennifer Carmack, who is a burn survivor, emceed the event.
