CARMEL, Ind. -- As Hoosiers deal with tension during the recession, many are turning to soothing hands to help ease their stress.Spa businesses said they are seeing an influx of customers who are trying to find a way to recharge themselves, 6News' Ericka Flye reported. At a time when most families are trimming budgets and cutting back any way they can, spending money on spa treatments might seem counterproductive.Terri Smith, who owns Woodhouse Spa in Carmel, said most people are just looking for a pick-me-up and a respite from the challenges they are facing daily."Everyone is feeling so stressed today," Smith said. "They'll be better after their service."Whether laid off, looking for a job or low on cash, customers said they find a welcomed retreat at the spa, with neck and shoulder massages in particular demand.Customer Kathy Carroll said treatments are not about pampering, but always about well-being. She cut back financially on other things to invest in her health."I don't do as much shopping as I used to. I would just as soon take care of myself than worrying about necessarily buying new clothes and keeping up to date with that stuff," Carroll said. After she retired from teaching, Sarah Walker opened an in home spa business with help from BeautiControl. At gatherings, Walker demonstrates how to relieve stress."They need this experience so that they can relax and feel rejuvenated," Walker said.Spa treatments can be expensive. While people are spending for treatments, they are still looking for a good value, opting for specials, package deals or quick fixes. With Valentine's Day ahead, Woodhouse Spa has extended hours and doubled its weekend staff to handle the demand.
