Gun Battle Erupts After Bank Robbery

Police Chase Suspect To Apartment Complex

Multiple shots were fired during and after a bank robbery in northeastern Marion County Thursday morning.

Police said a man burst into a Chase Bank Branch in the 4200 block of Franklin Road at about 9:20 a.m. and fired one shot into the floor, prompting someone in the bank to set off an alarm.

Investigators said the man was running out of the bank as Lawrence police Lt. Jack Bailey (pictured) pulled up to the scene.

Police said the man jumped into a stolen maroon minivan and fled eastbound on 42nd Street with Bailey in pursuit.

Bailey said the chase proceeded into a neighborhood about a half-mile from the bank, after which the man jumped out of the van with his handgun.

The officer was getting out of his police car when the man turned and fired two shots, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

One of the shots hit the police car in the passenger-side door, but didn't penetrate the vehicle.

"You can see the bullet hole in the car," Bailey said, gesturing to his cruiser.

Police said the man then ran into the Pinnacle Square apartment complex, just east of Post Road, before he turned and fired another shot at Bailey, a 28-year veteran of the department.

"I returned fire. I shot two shots at him. I don't want to have to shoot nobody unless I have to," Bailey said. "When he turned on me, I saw the gun in his right hand. When he fired the shot, I knew I was in a bad situation. It's my first shooting in 28 years, so I do feel lucky."

Police released a series of surveillance pictures from inside the bank.

No one was injured. Indianapolis police, Indiana State Police and Lawrence police were still searching for the man late Thursday morning. K-9 units were called in to assist with that search.

The man was described as Hispanic and wearing a gray sweat suit.

The area is heavily populated, providing plenty of places for the man to hide. Residents near the area were urged to stay in their homes and businesses.

Indianapolis Public Schools officials said schools No. 98 and 105 were locked down because of the incident. Schools No. 102 and 103 were also briefly locked down but are not now.

Police said they recovered the money that was stolen from the bank. It had been left behind in the stolen van.
