Pit Bulls That Attacked Woman Put Down

Owner Faces 4 Misdemeanor Counts

Two pit bulls that mauled a 68-year-old woman resulting in the partial amputation of one of her legs have been euthanized, while their owner appeared in court on Friday.

Lee Carroll, 31, faces four misdemeanor counts related to the attack -- two counts of failure to restrain a dog, resulting in serious bodily injury and two counts of harboring a non-immunized dog.

The family of Brenda Hill, who underwent more surgery at Wishard Memorial Hospital on Friday, told 6News' Derrik Thomas that they're satisfied that the dogs were put down.

"I'm very thankful for these dogs being euthanized. I believe it was a little late. I think it should have been done sooner," Hill's son, Greg Gilbert, said.

Prosecutors said there wasn't any other option for the animals.

"They've tasted blood now. You can't adopt these dogs out," said spokesman Mario Massillamany. "They attacked Brenda Hill without provocation. These dogs are vicious animals that almost caused her to lose her life."

Carroll tried to avoid the cameras as he walked into court Friday morning. The judge ordered him not to harbor any animals in his home, pending the outcome of the case.

Nine pit bull puppies that officers reported seeing when they first interviewed Carroll were not at the home when the two older dogs were confiscated. Carroll told investigators that he had already sold them.

Carroll said he has been unemployed for about a year. He was appointed a public defender. His next hearing was set for April.
