ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- A Boone County community is beaming with pride after it was named Indiana's "Best Affordable Suburb" by BusinessWeek magazine.Zionsville is also among the best in the nation, the magazine said. Less than 30 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, about 10,000 people live in Zionsville. The community offers a bit of everything, from upscale subdivisions to century-old homes and a renowned school system, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.
"I think 'best affordable' means looking at the amenities, what the town has to offer, looking at the housing stock, the entire package," said Ed Mitro, town manager. The quaint downtown area is a popular gathering place not only for the town's tourists, but also for those who live there. The bricks in the street in Zionsville's "village" are some of the oldest in the country. Combined with fine dining and shopping alternatives, the community is alluring to outsiders."There's anything and everything you would want to shop at, eat sushi to the greatest pub food in the world," said Kelly Martin, a resident and business owner. Many said the school system probably played a big role in earning the magazine's honor, as did the price of homes compared to residents' income."It's just the environment. There are so many parks here," said resident and business owner Leslie Jane. "Everybody walks, everybody talks to each other when they walk. So, there's a real neighborhood."Town leaders said the BusinessWeek article proves that they're doing many things right and that the community offers a lot of bang for the buck.
